Description
A lovely antique rim lock with its original skeleton key, dating from the 17th/18th century. Lovely example in working condition. Traces of original paint.
Some further details:
The wooden lock case (a characteristic of very early rim locks — later examples typically had all-iron cases)
The hand-forged wrought iron face plate, riveted to the wooden body
The sliding bolt visible at the side
The large, hand-forged skeleton key with a decorative quatrefoil (four-lobed) bow — a motif very typical of English and Welsh ironwork from the 1600s–1700s
The overall heavy, handmade construction with no machine-made precision, suggesting pre-industrial manufacture.
